Overview

BrainPOP Jr. offers animated educational movies, quizzes, games, activities, and other resources. Short movies follow the characters Annie and Moby as they explore topics across different subject areas. Movies are accompanied by a set of features which extend the concepts taught in the movie and allow young learners to apply what they have learned. Nearly all text on BrainPOP Jr. is read aloud, reinforcing reading skills and allowing young learners to navigate the site with more independence.

Target Audience: Grades K-3

Content Connections: Science, Math, Reading and Writing, Social Studies, Arts and Technology, and Health.

Standards Alignment

  • Content is mapped to the Common Core, aligned to state curriculum standards, and searchable with BrainPOP's online Academic Standards Tool
  • Use the Standards dropdown menu in BrainPOP Jr. to search for content by CCSS, or state curriculum standards, or use the other drop down menus to search by subject and grade.

Content & Features

Each BrainPop Jr. topic page includes:

  • Movie:  Each three to five minute movie serves as an engaging way to introduce, review, or further explore a concept. Throughout the movies, “Annie” poses questions that appear on her notebook (printable). When she does, you’ll see the “pause” button turn red, indicating a good time for class discussion. Have your students make connections and predictions.
  • Quiz:  Two leveled quizzes accompany each movie. Questions and answers, when the questions and their answers are all read out loud when you hover the mouse. This reinforces reading skills and also helps test for content knowledge and not reading ability. The quiz questions address higher order critical thinking skills and contain grade-appropriate vocabulary.
  • Game:   An educational game that allows students to apply what they’ve learned from the movie. The game may involve sequencing or matching, or it may require students to create a picture. Some topics also feature games created by BrainPop's  GameUp partners.
  • Word Wall:  The Word Wall is a set of vocabulary words and definitions taken from the movie. Each word and definition is read out loud to help develop reading skills. You can print these words out and put them on your class’s word wall. You might use the Word Wall as a warm-up activity to get students familiar with the terms before they watch the movie.
  • Talk About It:  A prompt and graphic organizer that accompanies each movie. Each topic has a different graphic organizer, including Venn diagrams, KWL charts, sequence charts, and more. You can print these out or share them through an interactive whiteboard. You may want to complete the Talk About It as a whole class activity or have partners complete them on their computers.
  • Write About It:  A writing prompt where students are asked to write a paragraph, a short story, a letter, or even a poem. Like all prompts on BrainPOP Jr., the Write About It is read out loud when you hover the mouse.
  • Draw About It:  A drawing prompt in which students may be asked to draw their answer to a math story problem or draw a food web. We recommend having partners describe their drawings to each other. BrainPOP Jr.’s features are designed to address and appeal to different learning styles.
  • Read About It:  Provides grade-appropriate reading recommendations that further explore the topic. Students who are interested in a topic may want to check these books out from their school or local public library.
  • Activity:  A printable sheet that further extends the concepts explored in the movie. Students may create a mini-book, write their own math story problems, or even do a quick science experiment.
  • Belly Up:  is a comic that follows two goldfish, named Frank and Joey. The comic extends the concepts taught in the movie, but is not read out loud. Students can read the Belly Up to each other or even act it out in front of the class.
  • Pop a Joke:  A silly joke about the topic which is read out loud.
