Overview

BrainPOP offers animated educational movies, quizzes, games, activities, and educator resources. Each of the more than 750 topics features a short animated movie in which a boy named Tim and his robot friend Moby introduce learners to concepts in different subject areas. The movies are supplemented with resources including a quiz, activities, related games, a timeline, and a selection of high-interest reading. See About BrainPOP

Target Audience: BrainPOP topics are appropriate for students in grades 4 through 12. Some are directed toward elementary school learners, while others address more sophisticated topics.

Content Connections:  Science, Math, English, Social Studies, Health, Technology, and Arts & Music.

Standards Alignment

  • Content is mapped to the Common Core, aligned to state curriculum standards, and searchable with BrainPOP's online Academic Standards Tool
  • Use the Standards dropdown menu in BrainPOP to search for content by CCSS, or state curriculum standards, or use the other drop down menus to search by subject and grade.

Content & Features

Each BrainPop topic page includes:

  • Movie:  Animated movies embed key learning concepts within a fun narrative starring Tim and Moby. The animations run between three and five minutes, and are ideal for introducing, reviewing, or exploring concepts. Important keywords, figures, dates, and concepts appear on screen, and the movie may be paused at any time to encourage class discussion.
  • Quiz:  Every BrainPOP topic contains a multiple-choice quiz testing the material covered in the movie. The quizzes are composed largely of higher-order thinking questions, which challenge students to make inferences, apply concepts, and synthesize new ideas with prior knowledge. Students can print, view, or email quiz results to a teacher.
  • Activities:  A special Activities page accompanies every BrainPOP topic. These printable pages give students the chance to answer open-ended questions about each topic, display their knowledge of specific issues, fill out graphic organizers, and research vocabulary words related to the movie. This last feature is a particularly good resource for ESL/ELL students.
  • FYI:  Each BrainPOP topic page contains an FYI section. This section contains four to six high-interest, informational text selections that deepen understanding of the topic and sharpen literacy across subject areas.
  • Q&A:  Each Q&A section features short, easy-to-understand answers to commonly-asked questions about that topic.
  • Spotlights: Each month, BrainPOP spotlights movies in two relevant areas. For example, February is Black History Month. So, movies about Martin Luther King, Civil Rights, Frederick Douglass, and blues music are highlighted, and lesson plans about these topics are easily accessible. See this page for a complete list of spotlights.
  • GameUp:  A collection of educational games from leading game creators, including Common Sense Media, Filament, iCivics, LGN, and many more. These games give students an opportunity to apply what they’ve learned on BrainPOP, and also hone their critical thinking skills. Each game has its quiz, which can help teachers assess whether players have transferred what they’ve learned in the game to the underlying concepts. GameUp is accessible from the BrainPop home page. Additionally, a GameUp button on selected topic pages links to related games.
  • Newsela for BrainPOP (NEW): This new feature allow educators and students to connect the BrainPOP video to an engaging, high-quality nonfiction article from Newsela. The texts are available at multiple tiers/levels, enabling all students to access the same content at their individual reading level.

Learning Supports & Tools

  • UDL:  Features are designed to address and appeal to different learning styles through multiple means of representation and expression.
  • Closed Captioning:  Reinforce comprehension and word recognition for all students. To turn on captions, simply click on the “CC” button next to the movie player controls. You may pause and restart movies at any time, so that students can read at their own pace.
  • Transcripts are accessible from the movie player with a feature to print.
  • Citing BrainPOP movies:  To reference an individual movie, or a factoid from the FYI section of that movie, you can use the MLA style for citing websites. The format is:  “Movie Topic.” BrainPOP Date Viewed. < URL OF MOVIE >.
For example, to reference the Pirates movie after watching it on September 1, 2014, the reference would be:
    “Pirates.” BrainPOP September 1, 2014. < http://www.brainpop.com/socialstudies/culture/pirates/ >.
  • Activities, Quizzes, FYI, and Q&A features enable students to gather and analyze information, and to monitor and extend their learning.
