The BCPS Mobile Innovation Lab (MIL), established in October 2016, is a converted school bus serving as a maker space and innovation station for the district’s schools, centers, and programs. Housed within the Mobile Innovation Lab are the tools, materials, and instructional supports for students and stakeholders to truly innovate. The Mobile Innovation Lab’s residency program and availability for school and BCPS-affiliated community events provide opportunities to reach all Baltimore County Public Schools stakeholders.
Renovations:
The renovations were made to a retired BCPS school bus in approximately 4 months by Office of Transportation staff members. Check out pictures of the construction process here!

Residencies & Events:
The MIL has a designated resource teacher in order to plan and execute a residency program for our elementary schools and school/community events for all schools grades PreK-12. MIL request forms for both residencies and school/community events are open two times per year to apply for fall and spring semesters - the next window will open over the summer for fall 2019. Weekly Bulletins communicate necessary information to BCPS staff members regarding the Mobile Innovation Lab and specific time-frames the request forms are open. More information regarding residencies and events can be found below!
When request forms are open, you can access them using the following links:

MIL Residencies
- Schools that have applied are selected through a lottery system and assigned a residency week.
- administrators are contacted and either "accept" or "reject" the residency week assigned.
- If accepting: administrators select up to 2 staff members to serve as co-facilitators throughout the residency.
- If rejecting: school may apply for a residency the next semester - they are not guaranteed a residency the next semester they apply. Another school is selected for the residency that assigned week.
- The length of a residency is determined by student population/number of homerooms. Additional staff members from the Innovative Teaching & Learning team are scheduled to support schools and facilitate activities inside the building.
- School-based administrators select teachers to co-facilitate activities throughout the residency with MIL resource teacher.
- Assigned teachers attend training meeting the week prior for planning and training.
- Assigned staff members are responsible for creating a MIL (and indoor schedule, if needed) following the set parameters.
- One assigned staff member must be present during each class period to co-facilitate activities.
- During residency: MIL stays on-site. For student and staff safety, parking location must allow the MIL to enter and exit the property at any time, including arrival and dismissal.
- Grades K-5 visit MIL for a 45-minute learning experience.
