Getting Started

Classtools.net hosts a variety of free student interactives.  Below are some of the tools that teachers find most useful.  Feel free to explore the dozens of "templates" for other tools that could be useful.

  • Arcade Game Generator is a free assessment tool that allows teachers to "input one set of questions and answers, and generate a whole batch of interactive, arcade-style games.  You can save them for use in the class, embed them in your blog/website/wiki!" Game choices include Matching Pairs, Word Shoot, Flashcards, Manic Miner and Cannonball Fun.
  • Brainy Box is a great presentation and storytelling tool for both teachers and students.  The site allows users to input text, images, and videos onto a six sided interactive cube which can then be rotated and presented.
  • The Countdown Timer is an online timer which allows teachers and students manage their time.  This classroom management tool allows teachers to set the timer and display it on any device with internet access. As the numbers count down it will display a bar which gets smaller and changes colors from green to red to help students visualize the time remaining. Users can also select a "soundtrack" which will play as the clock is counting down.
  • ClassTools provides templates which help users easily create several different types of diagrams to help when brainstorming or creating concept maps.  The types of diagrams include FishboneVenn DiagramTelescopic TopicTargetHamburgerJigsaw Diagram
  • The Dustbin Game is a game generating tool which could be use for classwork or assessment.  The site allows users to input words or phrases which will be sorted in up to four different categories.  The player must sort the words or phrases correctly in the least amount of time.
  • Fakebook is a tool for writing and presentation.  The site allows users to create a fake Facebook account for a fictional or historical figure.  Users can select to add photos, videos, status updates, friends and more.  If you can do it on Facebook, then you can probably do it on Fakebook.  Click to check out Amelia Earhart's Fakebook page!
  • A "Living Graph" is a timeline and presentation tool.  The site encourages students not only to select the most important events within a topic, but also to rate them against criteria such as success and failure, strength and weakness and so on.
  • Mission Mapquest is a game generator which can be used for assessing map skills.  The site allows users to create a game in which users must find certain locations across the globe based on questions you have created.  For example: "This is the county where Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister."  The user would zoom to Great Britain and collect the gold coin for a correct answer.
  • The Post-it tool from ClassTools is a presentation and assessment tool that allows users to create labels and place them over any image they upload.  The site allows you to change the color of the post it and enables users to draw an arrow from the post it to the correct place on the image.
  • The QR Game Generator is a tool teachers can use to easily generate games using QR codes.  These QR codes are scanned with a mobile device in order to quickly access a specific resource.  You can link to ANYTHING...photos, videos, websites, audio files, text, etc.
  • Random Name Picker is a classroom management tool teachers can access to help choose students in the class.  There are many different uses for this tool within the classroom.
  • The SMS Fake Text Generator is a presentation tool which can be used for writing and storytelling.  The site allows users to create a cell phone screen displaying a two way conversation between two characters.
  • The Timeline tool from ClassTools allows users to easily create color coordinated timelines that present events in chronological order.  The events follow along a timeline that users date from start to end.
  • Twister- Fake Tweet is a writing and presentation tool that "allows users to create fictional 'status updates' that can then be printed off for display purposes."  Users get to select the persons username, tweet text, #hashtag, and date. The site will automatically select a picture for the tweet.

Learning How

Because of the variety and volume of available tools on this site, you will have to look at each one for appropriate support materials and tutorials.  Be aware that some of the tools require Flash which isn't supported on all Internet browsers.
