Overview

The newspaper is an excellent information source for local, national, and global news, commentary, sports, entertainment, and more. Teachers and librarians may find newspaper content useful for engaging students in current events, making real world curriculum connections, appealing to personal interests, and promoting news literacy. The Baltimore Sun is a renowned local newspaper, and the digital edition is published daily.

 

Access

Each Middle School, High School, Alternative Center, and eLearning  has its own subscription to the digital edition of The Baltimore Sun during the school yearStudents and teachers can access the eNewspaper 24/7 via the icon under Grades 6-12 on the Digital Content tile in BCPS One. Users will be prompted to input their school's Username and Password to access the eNewspaper. Library Media Specialists at secondary schools (and STAT teachers at Alternative Centers/eLearning) will provide students and teachers with the unique Username and Password for their school subscription. NOTE:  Subscriptions expire each June and will be renewed in August for the new school year.

Standards Alignment

  • Common Core emphasizes authentic, nonfiction texts and literacy across academic content areas, and a variety of texts, with a special focus on history, civics, and social studies.

    • Standards for reading informational text, analyzing and supporting claims/arguments, etc. 

    • Standard 7 requires students to read and comprehend multiple information sources, including digital sources, images, charts, and graphs.

Navigation

 

 

Use the navigation bar at the top of the window to:

  • Adjust page size or display options using icons on the left.
  • Use arrows in the center to navigate pages.
  • Select the Share symbol for quick access to Edition Options such as Search, Share, and Download.
  • Select the Main Menu (hamburger menu) in the upper-right corner to  access a full list of options and sections for the edition.

Learning Supports & Tools

 

  • Selected pages or the entire edition may be downloaded in PDF format for posting in BCPS One, or printing for students to highlight, make margin notes, or mark up.

  • Readers can Search the edition for articles on a particular topic.

Educator Resources

  • Visit the Sun Media Group's Newspapers in Education homepage for CCSS-aligned Interactive Lessons designed to accompany stories in the news each week (Lessons updated every Monday).  From the homepage, pull down the Lessons menu for additional lessons and resources as shown below.

 

  • Direct Linking to specific editions/articles is not available. However, teachers or curriculum writers may Download a PDF of selected pages and provide access to the PDF document in BCPS One or on One Drive.
