Filming Images

Capturing your subjects on video is not always as easy as "point and shoot."  Below are some tips for getting the best footage possible.

  • Begin filming 3-5 seconds before and after exactly what it is you plan to capture.
  • Use a variety of shots and angles when possible.

  • Consider utilizing the Rule-of-thirds* for interviews and action shots (explained in this guide).

Sound Check

  • Whenever possible, use a headset to monitor your audio so that you can hear what you are recording.  Many professional grade cameras will have an audio output jack for stereo headsets.
  • Sound levels should be tested before filming begins as footage can be ruined by inaudible mics or clipping.
  • Typically, professional grade cameras and even flip-cams will display your audio levels visually in the on-screen display. You can monitor the volume with the meter at the bottom of the image.
