Digital Cafe is a series of 1-hour professional learning opportunities for members of Curriculum and Instruction. All Digital Cafe sessions will take place in the 3rd Floor eClassroom at the Jefferson Building.

Digital Cafe- Advanced Features of Blackboard Collaborate 

This session will focus on the more advanced features that can be used to engage participants online. Included: breakout rooms, web tours, independent page navigation, and participant contribution. Participants should have a solid foundation in using Blackboard Collaborate. This is not a beginner’s workshop.

 

 

Digital Cafe- Audio Tools 

This session will focus on audio recording tools to support curriculum development, student productivity, and formative assessment. Participants will explore: Sound Recorder, Audacity, and Vocaroo.

 

 

Digital Cafe- Basics of Blackboard Collaborate 

Participants will build a solid foundation to successfully deliver live and interactive Blackboard Collaborate sessions. Learn how to effectively display PowerPoint slides to participants, share content using the Application Sharing tool, record sessions for later playback, and more. 

 

 

Digital Cafe- BCPS One Tests & Quizzes for Formative Assessment 

Participants will explore the Tests and Quizzes feature of BCPSOne to create learning activities which allow instant feedback to students and provide formative data.

 

 

Digital Cafe- BCPS One Tests & Quizzes for Student Facing Assets

 

 

Participants will explore how they can build self-paced and student facing assets using the Test and Quiz feature of BCPS One. 

 

Digital Cafe- Beyond the Stream: Discovering Discovery Education 

Participants will learn about the features of Discovery Education. Features may include images, videos, and audio files that can be integrated into lessons and instruction. Participants will also explore the tips and tricks in the Spotlight on Strategies section.

 

 

Digital Cafe- Breakout EDU

 

 

You're on your way to a meeting with the superintendent when you discover you've been locked in!  The clock is ticking .  Can you decipher the clues, break the codes, and find the key to get out on time?  Breakout EDU is an educator friendly version of the popular "Escape Room" experiences popping up all over the country.  Take part in a breakout experience and explore ways that this unique vehicle for practicing real world problem solving can be incorporated into your curriculum.

Digital Cafe- Building Your Social Media Presence

Social media is the newest frontier in communicating and connecting with colleagues, parents, students, and the community. Educators must know how to navigate the ever-changing landscape of social media tools while adhering to district policies and best practices. In this workshop, participants will examine how to build a social media presence for themselves or their office.

Digital Cafe- Copyright and Fair Use for Curriculum Writing

C & I staff will develop knowledge and skills for ensuring the legal and ethical use of copyrighted material in curriculum and instruction, while fostering student media literacy and creative expression.

 

Digital Cafe- Device Nuts & Bolts

 

 

This session will cover some of the basic functions of the BCPS issued devices as well as a few of the core apps included on Windows 8 computers.  This is a hybrid of the Device 101 and Device Apps sessions offered last year.

 

Digital Cafe- Digital Content for Curriculum Writing 6-12

C & I staff will be able to integrate digital resources in grade 6-12 curriculum to support teaching and learning in a blended learning environment. BCPS licensed digital content includes authoritative, age-appropriate resources in a variety of media formats, including learning supports and features not available in print materials or on the open Web.

Digital Cafe- Discovery Board Builder

Participants will learn how to build a board. Resources may include audio and video within Discovery Education and resources housed outside of Discovery Education.

 

Digital Cafe- District Sharing of Digital Resources for Curriculum Writers

This workshop explains the procedures for making district resources available on Wixie, Discovery Education, SAFARI Montage, and ClassFlow.  

 

Digital Cafe- eBooks for Curriculum Writing K-12

 

 

Participants will become familiar with eBooks available for use in K-12 content curricula by exploring the interface and organization of BCPS eBook collections, using embedded learning supports, and creating direct links to eBook content for BCPS One Course Maps and Lessons.

Digital Cafe- Integrating Student Research in Curriculum

Online Research Models (for extended, in depth research) and Slam Dunk digital lessons (for brief, focused research) are available for various content areas and grade levels. These inquiry-based models integrate information literacy and other 21st century skills with Common Core standards and content learning objectives. C & I staff are encouraged to attend this session to ensure integration of student research in content curriculum units.

 

Digital Cafe- Kurzweil

 

 

Participants will explore the features and functions of Kurzweil to support instruction. 

 

Digital Cafe- Office 365 and OneDrive Overview

Participants will explore and learn how to use the features of OneDrive for teacher and student productivity.

Participants will learn how to use Microsoft OneNote. This includes exploring how to create personal notebooks for collection of notes and professional artifacts.

Digital Cafe- Overview of the Learning Management System Features

Participants will review the features of the LMS including Lesson Tiles, Turn Ins, Discussions, and Student Groups to understand how those features can be used to facilitate customized instruction.

 

Digital Cafe- Screencasting & Video Editing Basics

Participants will explore Screencast-O-Matic, Movie Maker, and OfficeMix in order to become familiar with the process of capturing and editing video. 

 

Digital Cafe- TPACK

 

 

Participants will explore the components of the TPACK model in order to support meaningful technology integration. 

 

Digital Cafe- Twitter 101

What’s a hashtag? How do send a tweet? How do I follow other twitterers? This is a beginner level experience for participants to build their Twitter confidence.

Participants will explore Wixie and identify how it can present information and content in different ways, differentiate the ways students can express what they know, and stimulate interest and motivation to learn. Wixie is available to all students in grades K-8.
